Oaks Volta has been very busy in April. He is behaving wonderfully out in the paddock and does not look for any trouble. Company of another horse beside him seems to play a major part in his daily activity because he loves to stand in the same part of his paddock, not to close but not to far away. He stands where he can easily see and be close to another. Volta is a clever smart thinking yearling. He has a very easy going nature and friendly temperament which are all good qualities of a young colt. In the middle of April the weather seemed to become alot colder in the evenings and on some days it rained alot here in South Gippsland. These are all factors that play an important part in growth for a youngster. Volta has grown a thick woolly coat and does look up behind. Do you know what the term Up Behind means? Well simply your yearling is going through a growth spurt! They look higher in the rump compared to the withers almost standing down hill , the front legs look shorter but over time they even up again and the rump and withers look level the same height…this all means your youngster is changing shape.

Volta eating his daily ration of Breed & Grow with Equi-Jewel out of his bright pink feed bin"

Handling:

From their earliest days horses must learn to accept but respect the human. It makes it a lot simpler and avoids many fights and misunderstandings along the way if you start from the beginning. It always starts with getting your foal or youngster used to the touch of your hands. He or she would love it if you stroked and talked to them without disturbing mum of course. The more times you can do this the stronger the connection will be between you and your new friend for life! But do keep in mind the fondling should not become spoiling! You must still reprimand them if they are trying to be a little naughty, eg: like nipping because nipping turns into biting. A firm voice and a gentle slap on the neck is usually all that is required, they are very smart animals and know exactly what you mean so by nipping it in the bud early is best. Then he or she will keep respecting you for the next steps you introduce them to.Gain their trust and give them confidence and they will be willing to learn.

Halter and Lead Training:

Teach your youngster to wear a head collar , best to have another person help you the first time to help you. Your friend goes up to them from the off side and holds them by putting their left arm around the chest and the right arm cupped under there tail end. You can then ever so gently while talking and stroking them go up to them, start at the shoulder , work your way up to the withers and from the near side and slip the head collar on. If needed a third person may need to hold the mother. Always approach slowly and never head on.If they tense and seem as though they might flee stand still for a moment until they relax.

To teach them to lead you should never pull from the halter, always from behind. The best method is to do this while following there mum, they are very happy to walk beside them so have some one lead the mum while you lead the youngster. You will feel a sense of joy when you see they are responding to your teaching!. Remember slow and steady reward and calmness is always best. At this stage you can touch his feet, groom him all over rub his head and muzzle and even the tail. Hold the end of the lead while grooming and if they try and walk make them stand still, keep control by giving a small tug on the lead and say “Stand”.They will at first be quite wary wondering what you are doing, but in no time at all will realise you are caring for them and will they will love having you give them attention and want you around. They will look for you because they will soon understand you are good to them and they will enjoy the pampering. Once he is weaned keep training and leading them alone by your side. This will make the breaking in process of tying up, washing, shoeing and tacking up and riding alot easier to manage.Use feed or treats to catch them with so they are happy to come to you and even now and then to praise them but not to often, do not spoil them they should not EXPECT a treat, its an extra special method of reward now and then. Routine is the best training method of all, horses love routine so doing the same thing at the same time is a good habit!

Halter fitting:

Until catching has been easily established , it can be very helpful to leave the head collar on the youngster. It is important the halter fits correctly and does not rub. The noseband must be loose so as not to rub the jaws during feeding or grazing, and high enough not to rub the projecting cheek bones. A leather head collar is ideal as it is less likely to rub than a nylon one and will break in an emergency, if they became caught on something. Leather is more expensive and will need regular cleaning at least once a month. If you only have a nylon collar make sure it has a buckle and pin so it will break under excessive strain.

Tying Up:

When the youngster is relaxed with leading it is time to tie them up. The first time should be done in a well confined safe area until they become reliable.Use this moment to groom them just as you had already been doing a number of times while holding the lead while halter and lead training, only a short terms to start with and lengthen the time frame slowly over a few days . Always stay with them to comfort them and help to feel safe and secure.Do not tie them up on concrete for the first time, a soft surface is best in case they do slip or try to pull back.

We also use a neck tie on our youngsters, this helps reduce the chance that if they do pull back they cannot get away and get into a habit of breaking away.It helps to gain a respect for being tied up the first time and every time after that. This should only be used if your youngster has the basic understanding ,training and respect already established and knows if they feel the pressure behind the neck will come forward and happily and realise they cannot get away.

All the above lessons will set standards for manners and compliance for the rest of your horses life. It will accept the things you ask because you are the boss, you are firm and you are fair. Above all you are pleased and praise good behavior.

Volta eating hay while tied up

Feeding advice direct from Ker Nutritionist Luisa Wood :

Hay/grass: Because of the way the horse’s digestive tract is designed, forage in the form of pasture, hay and chaff should be the basis of all horse’s diets. Forage will have a significant contribution to the diet of young growing horses. As with all horses, it is recommended that young horses are offered at least 1% of their body weight in forage per day, but young horses are able to eat 1.5-2% of their body weight in forage per day, which will supply a considerable amount of their required energy and nutrients for growth. The grass hay that Volta eats offers moderate levels of energy and protein but will not supply adequate nutrients to meet requirements for a growing horse of his age, which is why his diet also consists of Barastoc Breed N Grow. More on Breed N Grow in Volta May news…

Congratulations Bridgette Quinlan you are the ” Winner ”of guessing Volta’s weight for April. Bridgette guessed his weight to be 450kg . Team Joyce will be sending you a prize kindly donated by Volta’s Sponsors: Riders Diary, Pakenham Produce & Saddlery, Barastoc ,Ker and Team Joyce.

His weight for April was weighed at 448kg which means Volta put on 14kg for the month. We have come to the conclusion that the reason he did not put on as much weight for April as he did in March was due to being put out in the paddock and being able to run around using all his excess energy for the month and with the colder weather .

Team Joyce would like to say a massive Thank you to all our guessers and do hope they have another guess for May. We do appreciate all our Likes on Volta’s Facebook page and hope to keep you all interested in his changes and progress each month.

On Sunday 15th April Sarah took Ace to Pony Club. Ace has been out in the paddock for sometime now just having a relaxed life style and enjoying the country air. After selling LH Adelia Sarah did not have a mount to take to club so she asked her dad if he had a spare in the paddock. Wes said you could borrow Ace if you like”. So over a period of 2 weeks Sarah drove home in between her University studies to see if she could manage riding Ace. The pair were liking each other more and more because when Sarah went to the paddock to catch Ace he would come running to the gate wanting to be ridden. Sarah started off with short rides to start with and after 1 week then could have a longer ride and even a jump. It took 3 washes to make Ace look clean, he was so dirty and his coat gleamed after his pampering. He loved every bit of it and even arched his back with pleasure when we scrubbed him with the rubber curry comb.

Sarah’s first lesson was Cross-country, now Ace has popped a few logs at home on the farm but that is all. To Sarah’s delight Ace sailed over every obstacle she pointed him at. Ace absolutely loved his new identity of loping along on a nice collected canter popping over logs, tyres, drop downs, picnic tables, ditches and even colvets. He did not even spook at one fence”, said Sarah he was awesome!

The next lesson was Theory and Ace was happy to eat his hay in a yard and after lunch they had Dressage lesson. Once again Sarah said he did not put a hoof wrong, he was very willing to plod along and do whatever she asked of him. So all in all the day was a success.

It was a pleasure meeting with Kristie and her younger sister Mikayla today. Having a chat about there most loved horses and finding out what they like to do most. Mikayla loved to do dressage mostly and Kristie’s new horse Bec is good at everything but can become a little excited on the cross country course. Kristie was kind enough to get Bec out of the paddock so I could take a picture of them both wearing some of the great prizes donated by our sponsors.

Many Thanks to our Sponsors of ” WATCH VOLTA GROW”
Stay tuned to see what prizes we have for April.

Hello to all”, what a great a month it has been with the sun shinning and for horsing around. Horses seem to just feel great and be going so well , I would say its basically because of the warmth in the air and green grass that makes them feel good inside.

Oaks Volta is growing bigger everyday and every evening he has a run around his paddock kicking up his heels and even neighing in delight and excitement. LH King Arthur who is next to him just looks on and watches Volta use up all his excess energy but does not think to join him in his efforts. The two have become good friends as did LH Beckham when Volta was stabled. We have decided Volta will fit in where ever we choose to place him without causing to much fuss but of course not next to a mare I might add!

LH King Arthur in the background with Oaks Volta

Every month on the 15th we shall put a post up to guess Oaks Volta’s weight for the month ahead. This will give guessers enough time to think of the closest weight he might be. You can write your guess on his facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/WatchVoltaGrow or on our website here at the comments section below with the name ,date and time posted. The guidleines for determining the winner are outlined in an earlier post Winner Weight. Team Joyce would like to take this opportunity to suggest our viewers research our Sponsors for “Watch Volta Grow”.

Team Joyce competed at Mt Gambier over Easter . Wes , Milly and I left home at 4.30pm wanting to stop under the Stud Road over pass at 6.30pm to pick up Tiffany and Jordan. Tiffany had University until 4pm hence why we left late Thursday afternoon with LH Beckham and LH Brittany on board. The nights travel was tough because of all the heavy traffic through Melbourne and over the Westgate Bridge. Eventually once passed Werribee the road cleared up. We arrived at Mt Gambier around 12.oopm and made our yards. On the Friday morning Tiffany and LH Brittany attempted the Young Rider with the first round set at a strong 1.30m and they jumped a very nice clean round but did not make the final placings. Wes did not get a start today as they cancelled the rest of the day due to the terrible wind and rain coming across. The organisers of the event decided to start early the next morning to try and get through all the classes. The C & D Grade on Saturday was placed with the Friday class not run so they put all the prize money together and ended up with 60 riders. Wes and LH Beckham did a cracking jump off finishing with a time of 38 seconds”. There were 15 riders that made the jump off all jumping clean in the first round. Wes was awarded a lovely grey embroidered jacket for his first place prize many Thanks to the organisers as this was a very nice prize to be given.

Natasha Dixon and LH Warsaw traveled all the way to the South Australian Showjumping Championships last weekend. What a great success to do so well at such a big competition full of top level riders of all levels. Natasha and her lovely supportive family all went together to support the pair.

Natasha says: The placings were as follows: on the Friday I had the 1.10 then the 1.20 speed class and I came 4th in the 1.10 and I was 1 of only 10 clear rounds in the 1.20, on the second day we had the Junior Speed Class (1.10) and the Junior Grand Prix (1.10-1.20) we came 6th in the Speed and then we came 3rd in the Grand Prix. On the last day we just had the State SA Junior Championship (1.20) and we were so close to winning the class but we just had one down, we ended up coming 4th anyway so I was very pleased we had a great trip !

Team Joyce say: “What a rewarding weekend with only one rail down all show”. Not all shows go like this, in the sport of showjumping one rail is enough to put you right out of the running but sometimes its still enough to gain a place. So Natasha should feel proud of this show and look forward to the next one. Congratulations Natasha & LH Warsaw

The Winner for guessing Oaks Volta’s weight for 1st April is

Kristie Summerfield guessing 435 kg and his correct weight is 434 kg

Congratulations only 1 kg difference

Team Joyce will be sending you a prize kindly donated by Barastoc, Pakenham Produce & Saddlery and Team Joyce

How we determine the WINNER

The person who has guessed closest to the correct weight with the earliest day and time is the winner. So if you see a weight amount already posted guess 1 or 2 either side so you may have a better chance of being the winner.

Eg: Some one has guessed 312kg and you were going to put 312kg instead write 313kg or 311kg then your answer is on its own and can be closer or further from the correct answer. It is pointless guessing the same as them because they were already in the lead being an earlier post. So its a good idea to check what others have guessed before you nominate your weight.

Tape showing 434kg Well Done Kristie"

From the horses first day of a horse’s life, development in all aspects of their body takes off at a very fast rate. Teeth are no exception. Horses have baby teeth just as we do (Incisor or front teeth & molars or rear teeth).

Between 2 ½ and 4 ½ years of age, horses will naturally grow 24 temporary baby teeth, as they mature permanent teeth will develop and push through the gums forcing the temporary baby teeth from the gums. The majority of horses will grow 20 of the 24 milk teeth in a short period of 12-15 months, between 2 ½ yrs of age, to 3 yrs and 10 months. While this is happening, the young horse will also be developing, and then cutting another 12 permanent molars at the rear of his mouth between 1 to 3 yrs. Wolf teeth can appear between 6 months up to 2 yrs of age and canines in geldings and stallions around 4 yrs of age.

At 5 yrs of age, a horse is considered to have developed a mature mouth consisting of 36 teeth ( 12 incisors and 24 molars).

In summary: before birth to 4 ½ yrs, geldings and stallions will develop and cut 64 teeth to leave a mature mouth of 40 teeth and a mare will develop and cut 60 teeth to leave a mature mouth of 36 teeth.

The majority of dental activity , change and growth occurs between ages 2 ½ to 3 yrs and 10 months.

Horses can not talk!!! However, out of character behaviour while your horse is eating or being ridden during these above ages, may be an attempt from your horse to communicate some difficulties he may be having due to the enormous amount of dental changes that maybe occurring.

Deciduous (Baby Teeth)

1st incisors (centrals) – Birth or 1st week

2nd incisors (intermediates) – 4-6 weeks

3rd incisors (corners) – 6-9 months

1st, 2nd, & 3rd premolars (cheek teeth) – Birth or first 2 weeks for all premolars

Permanent (Adult Teeth)

1st incisors (centrals) – 2 1/2 years

2nd incisors (intermediates) – 3 1/2 years

3rd incisors (corners) – 4 1/2 years

Canines (bridle) – 4-5 years

Wolf teeth (1st premolars) – 5-6 months

2nd premolars (1st cheek teeth) – 2 1/2 years

3rd premolars (2nd cheek teeth) – 3 years

4th premolars (3rd cheek teeth) – 4 years

1st molars (4th cheek teeth) – 9-12 months

2nd molars (5th cheek teeth) – 2 years

3rd molars (6th cheek teeth) – 3 1/2 – 4 years

WOLF TEETH

Wolf teeth are very small teeth located in front of the second premolar. They rarely appear in the lower jaw. A horse may have one to four, or no wolf teeth. By the time a horse is six years old, he will have a full set permanent teeth.

Pictures below are of Volta’s teeth March 24th , he is now 15 months old. Very interestingly we noticed Oaks Volta has lost one of his milk teeth.

Volta has one foot 1 cm bigger than the other which we shall keep a close eye on in his next trimming. His neck is changing shape and looks longer and thinner. In May we shall re measureall the measurements again and see what areas seem to change the most? He has been wormed now on April 1st so he will not be due for another 6-8 weeks. Paddocked horses need to be wormed every 6-8 weeks but stabled horses only every 3 months and because Volta will now be going out into a paddock he will need to be re done in 6-8 weeks. We gave Volta an “All Wormer” this time to kill all the important parasites such as tapeworms or bots. We shall rotate the brand of his wormer because we have always found best results by NOT using the same one every time to prevent the worms becoming resistant to the paste. We also never under dose!

Welcome to our first edition of “Watch Volta Grow”

Oaks Volta was purchased from Oaks Stud in The Oaks near Sydney in October 2011. Wesley and I saw him advertised and liked his breeding the most and had to take a look at him to see if we thought he would suit our plans. Team Joyce hope to produce a fine top quality Performance Stallion and stand him at stud. We knew it would be a very long process because of his age but decided maybe this would benefit us greatly as we would be doing all the training from the very early stages ourselves and therefore Volta would know exactly what is expected of him and how we wish him to behave.

Team Joyce went to the Australian Showjumping Championships held at Dubbo in October and on our way back home went via The Oaks to pick up our new edition. Volta loaded quite well as you can imagine his eyes did open very wide when he saw he was walking toward a huge ramp and could vaguely see other horses aboard. LH Brittany, LH Warsaw , LH Beckham and LH Folly were all eager and keen to see who was coming into the last bay. Three people virtually carried him up the ramp and we finally placed him in his spot and shut the divider as quickly as we could and shut the ramp. Now we just hoped he would stand there all the way to Korumburra.

Volta traveled perfectly and off loaded very keenly to say the least. He was very pleased to lay down in his stable and have a roll. He ate his hay and drank his water and seemed to settle very well beside LH Beckham. We decided LH Beckham would be his buddy so by placing them next to each other we could then create a bond we hope. Over the next week we noticed they had become friends and would nudge each other regularly. When LH Beckham wanted a pat over the stable door Oaks Volta would ask for one to in no time.

Oaks Volta at his new home in Korumburra

In early November Oaks Volta appeared to have a runny nose and a cough. This stayed with him for at least 3 weeks, we decided this was the climate change , humidity change and general surroundings. We let it take its course and soon enough he was as good as new again. His weight did drop a little but his appetite never did.

At first we cleaned the stable with him in it as he needed to get used to us in there with a rake and the sawdust falling on his legs. He kicked out a little at first but over time he knew the drill. In December Wes started to tie him up while we cleaned his stable so he was used to putting the headstall on and off. Volta is a quick learner and wants to please he loves people and he adores LH Beckham.

Oaks Volta nudging LH Beckham

Some Handy Information:

Horse training or retraining is not a lock-step procedure. Horses learn at different rates and some may catch on quickly, while some take much longer. Don’t set a deadline. Horses are very sensitive to body language and mood. If you are in a rush, your horse will feel he must rush too. But he won’t know why you are rushing and his behavior will reflect that. If your horse is hard to lead spend 15 minutes walking and halting. Don’t ask for anything more. If you have only 30 minutes to ride choose an exercise you can do in only 30 minutes. Save the bigger lessons for when your time is more flexible.

Before you begin plan what you are going to do with your horse. Have all the equipment you’ll need handy. Plan your time so you can work uninterrupted. You will have a difficult time teaching if you give your horse only part of your attention. You’ll confuse him if you try to teach him while telling the dog to go lie down, talking to another person or running off to fetch a piece of equipment. Be well organised. Only by re-enforcing good behavior will you eventually replace the unwanted behavior. Let every training session end with a success, no matter how small.

Your horse shouldn’t pull you, barge ahead, hang back or push into you. Teaching your horse to lead properly is the basis for almost every other aspect of good ground manners.

What you need to teach a horse to lead:

Horse, haltered with leadrope.

Safe working area such as a ring or arena.

Optional: may want treats

Lots of time and patience.

In April Volta will have a wash and take a trip in the float and have more leading and some free jumping experience. Stay tuned for up loaded footage and have a guess what his weight will be by the 1st May to win great prizes.

Team Joyce performance horses are fed only the best type of feed available because if you want to achieve a long healthy life out of your performance horse with top results in competition it is a must to put in the tank what you wish to get out! Because Barastoc have created a range of products to meet your animal’s individual needs throughout all stages of life your horse will benefit by behaving happily and being obliging in everything you ask of them. They can give you what you ask because they are fueled correctly.Whether it be High Performance,Sport and Leisure or Breeding the feeds are scientifically formulated to provide an ideal source of vitamins, minerals and energy, your horse will look and feel its best. Team Joyce feed Calm Performer, Cool Command, Horse Block, Breed and Grow, Ker Equi-Jewel and Groom as outlined below. This is why our horses all look amazing in their coats, hooves , body condition and have long lasting energy levels. Feed is the most important tool in producing a healthy happy horse.

Groom

A supplement for a shiny coat and healthy horse.
Crude Protein 20.0%
Crude Fat 6.0%

Calm Performer

Cool feed for horses and ponies at maintenance or in light to moderate work.

Crude Protein (min) 11.0%
Crude Fat (min) 2.5%
Digestible Energy (est) 11.0MJ/kg

Cool Command

High energy oats-free muesli feed for performance horses.

Crude Protein (min) 13.0%
Crude Fat (min) 7.0%
Digestible Energy (est) 13.0MJ/kg

EquiShure

Team Joyce feed Ker EquiShure when our horses are under stress in competition , stabled intensely and fed high amounts of protein. EquiShure gives us the confidence that each horses hind gut is functioning properly.Sometimes the hindgut is overwhelmed with lactic acid when a horse is experiencing acidosis, the intestinal lining becomes inflamed and irritated, causing the horse discomfort. The irritation may be severe enough to induce behavior characteristic of colic.EquiShure, a time-released hindgut buffer, may be beneficial in counteracting the effects of this syndrome so Team Joyce feel confident that by adding this additive we are being reassured our performance horses will not feel the effects of sub-clinical acidosis.

Horse Block

A protein and mineral supplement for horses.
Crude Protein (min) 11.0%
Crude Fat (min) 0.5%

Stay tuned to see what Oaks Volta is fed and why!

Barastoc & Ker

Team Joyce will write up detailed posts on Oaks Volta.

We thought it would be of great benefit to many of those out there

who have a youngster themselves or some who would just like

to watch how a youngster develops especially a COLT! Team Joyce

have bred a few horses over the years and from foals watched them grow

and break them in and produce them as quality Performance horses. This will be a new

adventure for us to because we will not just watch Oaks Volta visually

change but we will write details about his total weight, hair length, hoof

size, color changes, amount of teeth even noting his first bath, free jumping

experience, first trimming of his feet, worming schedule, feeding regime etc..

and so much more. Team Joyce want this whole process to be a live experience

and hope others will Watch Oaks Volta Grow!

We welcome any questions you may want answered and hope to make

this live interaction and journey a long and fulfilled one with us, and

in the end stand Oaks Volta at stud for anyone wanting to breed a fine

youngster of there very own!

Stay tuned and enter the quiz questions and have a go at guseeing

Volta’s weight for next month. In turn we shall reward you with a gift

of Thanks for just taking part.

November his weight was 295kg

December his weight was 310kg

January his weight was 335kg

February his weight was 375kg

March his weight is 400kg

What will he be in April? He will be weighed on the 1st April

A live video clip will appear showing his result.

Please enter your guess as a comment on his Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/WatchVoltaGrow

Please feel free to like the page! Many Thanks…….

If you do not have a Facebook page please guess Volta’s weight below in the comments box

noting the day and time you lodged your guess.

Winner will be announced April 2nd

How we determine the WINNER

The person who has guessed closest to the correct weight the with the earliest day and time is the winner.

Tiffany also rode in the 1.10m welcome stakes on LH Brittany and just used

this as a fun round as Tiffany is not home during the week at all because of

University commitments so we look after LH Brittany at home during the

On the Saturday Wes rode in the 1.35-1.40m AM3 on LH Beckham and he

made the jump off but had a rail. And Tiffany rode in the 1.05m 2 phase in

Ring 2 on LH Brittany and again just had a ball smiling all the way round the course!

LH King Arthur had a holiday today.

Tiffany with her wonderful mare LH Brittany in her new pink shirt!

On Sunday Wes rode in the Future Stars 50 points and less , in other words

Premier Floats Futurity and with tough comptition

placed 4th LH Beckham which Wes was delighted with! It was a great feeling having LH Annie-Elka ridden by Tom Mc Dermott in 3rd place in the line up next to LH Beckham! Well done Tom you do a good job on such a talented super careful mare from Lals Haven stud.

LH Annie-Elka next to LH Beckham!
Then he rode in the D grade Championship on LH King Arthur but unfortunately

obtained 1 time fault, so no jump off this time but he also completed a super

round. All in all a great show for Team Joyce.

The Saturday nights entertainment was alot of fun with Ben Conway singing

and playing his guitar. Thanks Ben!

Our Story:

On the 6th of November 2011, I purchased my amazing girl L.H Warsaw. She has been a real sweet heart ride and to have around, although I haven’t had her long I can tell we are a great match.

After having her for a few weeks I took her to our first competition. That was at Tonimbuk World Cup Show, we competed in numerous events getting consistent results. The first time I competed her it was a little nerve racking as it always is, going out with a new horse.

After each competition went by we just got better and better! Within the last month of 2011 we had competed at Tonimbuk, Victorian Young Rider Championships and Bega. Bega was very fun and we jumped very well there and we were just trying to get our rounds more smooth. It was quite warm up there but we had a great time.

So far in 2012 I have competed at Lang Lang interschool, Grand Valley, Victorian show jumping stables and ISJ, recently Warsaw and I have been achieving great results. The last competition we went in was ISJ. We went clear in the 115cm two-phase and came 2nd, and in the 115cm – 125cm grand prix we came 1st! That meant we were Champion for the day!

This year I would like to start competing in Young Riders and just keep bonding and growing with Warsaw. She is settling in very well and she has made new friends with my other horses Lark, Tay and my pony Blue.

Warsaw is a complete angel and I am very lucky to have her. Thank you to Trish and Wes for letting me purchase their Precious Baby.

Team Joyce went to Port Phillip Showjumping Summer Classic on the 11th and 12th Feb.

The sand/grass arena was superb the committee have done a fine job making sure the

surface was right for 2 days of jumping. There were large numbers of riders in all classes

and Mr Gavin Chester from Stratford built courses to suit all levels.

Wes rode LH King Arthur in the Omega Feeds D Grade on Saturday and had one rail.

He travelled alot more evenly and smoother on his corners but needs more rounds

Not only has he knocked up a Silver Medal in the Youth Olympics

but now a Gold one from the CSIY-B in Singapore 3-5 February.

Recently Zoe Bolton from Sale went to Singapore to compete in Showjumping

on borrowed horses. LH Titan was bred by Team Joyce and ridden by Tiffany

Joyce for many years before we sold him for the Youth Olympics in Singapore

in 2010.

Zoe rode perfectly to win the Individual Section she was well out in front

with a double clear clean fastest round.

Team Joyce would like to congratulate Zoe on her fantastic feat, Zoe

is a Young Rider with a huge natural talent for riding all types of horses

at all levels.

Wandin Park was the venue for the Grand Valley Showjumping Classic.

Saturday had lovely weather, a little to hot when the sun came out but

with the slight breeze blowing made it alot more bearable. Large numbers

saw the day finish rather late and everyone ravishing for dinner!

Wesley had a very successful day riding LH Beckham. The first class they

rode in was the 1.25m Open and in the jump off LH Beckham had one rail

but a minor rider error Wesley half halted trying to adjust his stride and

LH Beckham took that signal as a trot to stop, quickly Wes encouraged

him to keep going and basically trotted to a straight fence with

very little room before take off. Which meant a tap of the top rail. But the

rest of the round was terrific. The next class was the 1.35m Open and Wes

wanted to see how LH Beckham would cope with a bigger track and more

technical lines . Mr Leeson Serrit ( course builder) set the course to be a little

challenging in spots. To our delight LH Beckham took it all in his stride and

put on a fine performance! The combination placed 1st…..

Judge Mr Brian Scattergood presenting Wes and LH Beckham with the ribbon.

Good job Beckham

LH King Arthur started in the 1.15m Open and this was hard for him, not the

height but all the tents, flapping signs, people ringside and of course the judges

van as well were all very daunting to him. His eyes popped open as soon

as he entered the ring. With only one rail down and lots of way wood striding

on course he also accomplished a great round.

On Sunday the sun disappeared by midday but the wind took over all day.

And blew a gale by lunch..LH Beckham had a go at the Mini Prix and with the wind

blowing so hard , he lost concentration on course and also had one rail.

Waiting for there turn

We expect these minor happenings on course at different shows and places because

these two young horses have not seen nor heard it all yet. They need to do the miles

to see more and not worry so much, only time will help them and plenty

of patience. Wes is very happy to give them both that as they are very nice, handy

confident young horses to have.

Off to Lang Lang next week end to the Port Phillip Showjumping weekend.

Saturday Ring 1

What wonderful weather for two days straight. Lang Lang show was just

perfect in many ways the weather was one and the activity of many people

enjoying all sorts of interests from Showjumping to showing goats”. There

were people everywhere on Saturday as this was the main Agricultural day

and Sunday was Port Phillip Showjumping with 2 jumping rings and the Adult

Riding Ring from the Agi part of the Lang Lang Society.

Wesley and I took LH Beckham and LH King Arthur on the Saturday and both

of them jumped fantastic.

LH King Arthur had one rail down in the jump off of the D Grade and LH Beckham

placed 2nd in the 1.25M Open.

LH Beckham proudly showing his 2nd place ribbon.

We went back on Sunday and it was LH King Arthur’s turn to shine!

He also placed 2nd in the D Grade with a very large field of 60 horses.

Wesley was so pleased with his King Arthur because he was able to push

his canter a little faster and also slice some fences on an angle and Arthur

said ok I can do this!

Oh I also had a lovely time in the Fun Ring on Saturday with a lovely group of

people , it was very enjoyable seeing the big smiles on the riders faces when

they recieved a ribbon for longest tail or fattest pony. It has been a very long

time since I went into the show ring with Sarah and Tiffany and it brought

back so many wonderful memories!

This was LH Adelia’s very first Offical 1.05m Maiden D Grade

event and Sarah was very happy with how she went. As soon

as she cantered into the ring LH Adelia’s eyes opened very wide.

Then as they were half way round the course the ” Swish swish

ride started up, this also startled LH Adelia a little but because

of her easy going nature she finished the course. Having just 2 rails down

meant they did not return for the jump off but later in the afternoon

Sarah re-saddled to make sure her experience was a very pleasant one

as they just roamed the grounds on a loose rein showing her the show cows

the people with prams and to hear all the noises of the show from the rides

and crowd.

Sarah & LH Adelia watching the horses jump!

Tiffany and LH Brittany went in the C & D Grade 1.15m class and as per usual

LH Brittany was on fire! The surface in the ring is just so good that all the horses

seem to jump extremely well off it. Wesley took LH Beckham and LH King Arthur

in this class also. All of them jumped clean and were eligible for the jump off.

This was going to be a fast jump off as all the horses in it were very good horses.

Wesley went out first on LH Beckham and did a cracking round, cut corners,

sliced fences on angles and jumped clean, he set a real tight time!

Tiffany went out a few horses later and did not take her foot off the peddle,

LH Brittany motored along also at a fast pace, Tiffany opted to go round most

jumps and still ended up faster than her dad” the crowd roared with delight

and Tiffany punched the air with extreme happiness with their attempt.

Wesley then went again on LH King Arthur, as this course was a challenge

for our youngster her took it all in his stride, Wes coaxed him round gently

but with a few attempts to also cut some corners and slice just a few fences

and to our amusement came up with another clean round.

Tiffany and LH Brittany placed 1st

Wesley and LH Beckham placed 2nd

Wesley and LH King Arthur placed 5th

Tiffany & LH Brittany place 1st at the Wonthaggi Show in the C & D Grade

What a good result from Team Joyce’s performance horses….

The presentation with Dad and daughter in the line up is an wonderful

occasion and a rare one.

The last class of the day was the D Grade and Wes rode LH King Arthur.

Once again he proved himself by jumping 2 clean rounds and placing 5th.

Wes is very happy with both his horses, LH Beckham becasue this time last year

he took the liberty of running out at the blue oxers and this year was keen

and happy to jump whatever they approached. LH King Arthur still a Maiden

horse and able to come out and jump 1.15m in his first class so easy and

continuing to jump clean in all his rounds. LH Brittany is always a trooper

and tries her utmost best, Tiffany always says she makes her look good!

Sarah was also most impressed with LH Adelia’s behavior at her very first lively

show and took it all in her stride. With the encouragement of Sarah

reassuring her all day this combination had a superb day also.

Now off to Lang Lang next week, just Wesley and his 2 horses because

Tiffany and Sarah have other commitments. Will post how we go!

Oh Wesley and LH Beckham also won the

Team Joyce are proud to say we own” Oaks Volta ”

He is a stunning young colt and will mature to a fine stallion to stand at stud!

The mating of Vivant over the Darco/Voltaire mare Altes has been very successful. This colt is calm like his grandsire, close coupled but strongly muscled; not too heavy.
